Refugee Resettlement Meeting
Mar 13 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Refugee Support Update Remember last summer when we surveyed members about interest in supporting refugees who are making Richmond their home? We received a generous response from many members who were ready to volunteer and contribute time and resources. We are also happy to report that faculty and students at Union Presbyterian Seminary are eager to join us in this effort to welcome refugees to our community. With this foundation laid, we are finally ready to act! On Tuesday, March 13 from 7-9 PM in the Fellowship Hall, representatives from CWS will hold an orientation meeting for anyone interested in volunteering with refugees in Richmond. While we hope to welcome a newly arriving family soon, few refugees are coming to Richmond due to the national drop in refugee admissions. However, CWS informs us that there is still plenty to do with families who are already here! Specifically, we are looking for GPPC volunteers to: Serve on a Welcoming Committee in case of a new arrival (airport pickup, welcome meal, maybe some apartment setup); Provide English as a Second Language tutoring to adults and children; Donate clothing, furniture, or other household items (and also help us coordinate those donations); Accompany and/or transport refugees to medical or social service appointments, training, job interviews, or other activities; and Help coordinate Communications/Logistics (how we organize ourselves, communicate needs) If you are interested in any of these activities, please plan to come to our meeting on March 13. We will send out a digital invitation in the coming days, but you can also contact the Church Office to RSVP. If you’re unable to attend but would still like to be a member of a volunteer team, please also let us know! And finally, if you have any questions about this effort, please contact Sarah Workman.
